I would like to take a moment and address a topic that comes up quite often. Many visitors to this site ask the same question, “How can I join your organization?” The answer is not a simple answer, so please give me a moment to explain.
PFUFA does not accept 'volunteers.’ As you can read about in our History, our organization was founded by fans that were chosen and inducted into the Visa “Hall of Fans” in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. From its outset, PFUFA has set itself apart from other fan organizations by limiting its membership to only Visa inductees. After the Hall of Fans program was suspended in 2005, PFUFA went through a couple of lean years. That changed in 2007 at the Annual Business Meeting. The members decided to change the By-Laws of the organization and the PFUFA Draft was established. Through late 2007 and early 2008, the Inaugural PFUFA Draft was held and it was a complete success--15 new members were inducted into our organization--the Class of 2008.
Our draft system is unique and is setup based on the NFL draft system. Like the scouting program by the NFL, our membership is charged with going throughout the stadiums during any given season to find “special fans.” Each member takes this responsibility very seriously and knows that each possible draftee will represent them to the group. In other words, sponsorship.
As such, the standard we put on these fans is very high. When we do find a possible draftee, we will approach them and ask them to consider us. In this manner, we hand pick each one. Of the numerous possible draftees selected, however, only a few will be asked to join the organization.
What makes a “possible draftee?” First and foremost, that fan HAS TO embody our motto: "TO PROMOTE THE FELLOWSHIP OF ALL FANS, ENCOURAGE SPORTSMANSHIP AND SUPPORT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES." A fan will not be considered unless he/she possesses all three of these elements.
Also, it is not necessary for possible draftees to dress up in costumes or outfits. Instead, we are looking for fans who passionately represent their team, BUT who will also respect another fan that passionately roots for another team.
With this said, we do not have an ‘inflated view’ of our organization, and we know we are not the end all-be all of fan groups. Though we do have a close relationship with the Hall of Fame, we don't determine "who is a fan and who is not." There are numerous groups and associations for fans; we are just one of them. If someone is not in our group, that doesn't necessarily mean they are not a fan--or a special fan.
We are not sponsored by the NFL or any team. In fact, we don't want to be 'tied' to them. We prefer to be independent.
We are currently looking for a few good fans…. If you are one of them, if you are a fan that should be a part of this organization, we will find you. Maybe not this month or this year, but we will find you.
